We’ve talked about starting with your own inner clarity.
Now we move to the next step.
Who is that hero, exactly?
The ideal client exercise can feel intimidating. It can feel narrowing. Some people even resist it because they’re afraid it will box them in.
It doesn’t.
It sharpens your signal.
And when your signal is clear, the right people recognize themselves faster.
This Isn’t About Demographics
When I say “ideal client,” I’m not talking about age, income, or whether they drink oat milk or black coffee.
I’m talking about alignment.
The person whose internal world resonates with yours.
The person whose struggle you naturally understand.
The person whose transformation matters deeply to you.
If you’ve done your own inner work first, this step becomes much easier.
Because now you can ask:
Who do I naturally light up around?
Whose struggles do I instinctively lean toward?
Whose growth feels meaningful for me to support?
Questions to Clarify Your Ideal Client
Here are some reflection questions you can sit with:
- Who do I genuinely want to work with?
- What is the most painful or frustrating thing in their life right now?
- What keeps them stuck?
- What do they secretly wish could change?
- What are they trying to move toward?
Then go deeper:
- If that pain continues, what does it cost them?
- What does relief or transformation make possible?
- What shifts in their identity if they solve this?
And then the most important layer:
Why does it matter?
Not on the surface.
On a philosophical level.
The Philosophical Why
The philosophical why sounds like this:
Life should be this way.
It’s unjust when it isn’t.
People deserve better.
It shouldn’t be so hard.
For example, I once worked with a jewelry artist who creates stunning silver castings of body parts — legs, torsos, arms reaching outward. It’s bold, artistic, and unapologetic.
At first glance, you might think, “It’s jewelry.”
But when we dug deeper, the philosophical layer emerged:
What you wear tells the world who you are.
You shouldn’t have to explain yourself every time you enter a room.
Art is a statement.
Creative expression deserves to be visible.
Her clients weren’t just buying jewelry.
They were buying identity.
Visibility.
Permission to stand out.
The philosophical shift was this:
You should be able to walk into a room and be understood without shrinking yourself.
That’s powerful.
And your offers — even ones that seem practical or aesthetic — have this deeper layer.
Bringing It Back to You
So ask yourself:
Who is my ideal client?
What are they navigating right now?
And on a deep level, what feels unfair, out of balance, or incomplete in their world?
Then ask:
If they work with me, what gets restored?
Dignity?
Confidence?
Clarity?
Belonging?
Freedom?
Self-expression?
When you can articulate that philosophical layer, your messaging shifts.
It stops sounding like features and benefits.
It starts sounding like alignment.
Learning to Communicate Simply
Once you’re clear on your ideal client, you can shape your offer with clarity and simplicity.
Here’s a template you can experiment with:
You (the client) want (desired outcome)
To get that, you need to (key shift or ability)
And to get that, you need (fill in your service or framework that addresses that shift). Because (insert philosophical “should”)
Or:
You want to (outcome)
To get that, you need (core shift)
And to get that, you need (your support). Because…(insert philosophical “should”)
Examples:
Burnout Recovery Coach
You want to stop feeling exhausted all the time. To get that, you need to understand your nervous system and rebuild sustainable rhythms. And to get that, you need my Rest & Reset coaching framework…because life shouldn’t feel like survival mode.
Somatic Bodyworker
You want to feel at home in your body again. To get that, you need to release stored tension and rebuild trust with your nervous system. And to get that, you need hands-on somatic bodywork sessions…because your body shouldn’t feel like an enemy.
Confidence Coach for Women
You want to speak up without second-guessing yourself. To get that, you need to untangle old identity patterns and build self-trust. And to get that, you need my identity recalibration coaching…because your voice deserves space in the room.
The simplicity here is intentional.
If we over-explain, over-justify, or over-complicate what we do, we lose people.
Think about how quickly someone decides whether to keep watching an Instagram reel. Within 3-6 seconds, they know if they’re interested or not.
Your messaging works the same way.
Your services are too important to be missed because they’re buried in complexity.
The goal is not to reduce your depth.
It’s to create a clear doorway.
When you can explain your work in a clean, almost “kindergarten-level” way, people can quickly recognize whether they need you.
Clarity removes confusion.
Confusion creates hesitation. And that is a big disadvantage to the people who need your services.
The right clients don’t need convincing.
They need recognition.
A Gentle Invitation
You don’t need to perfect this overnight.
But take some time to sit with your ideal client not as a marketing avatar — but as a human being navigating something real.
What do they deserve?
What should be easier for them?
What would feel like balance restored in their life?
When you can name that, your offers become clearer.
Your messaging becomes simpler.
And the right people recognize themselves in your words.
That’s when your work lands and your service expands.
